Tackle Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my son have to be to play tackle football?

The Flames tackle football program requires that your son be 6-years-old by August 1.

Where do I get equipment rental information?

There is no equipment to rent, all the pads required to play tackle football are provided by the Flames. You will bring a $250.00 deposit check to equipment handout that will be destroyed when your cleaned equipment is returned. We provide helmet, shoulder pads, rib guards, mouthgaurd, knee pads, sox, practice and game pants as well as your game jersey. You are responsible to purchase a athletic cup, girdle for under your pants (we offer them for $20.00), cleats, and a practice jersey (we offer practice jersey options).

What level will my son play?

Your son will be assigned a level based on three criteria:

  1. His age
  2. His weight
  3. His skill level

The Flames place the highest importance on your son's safety and ensuring the highest degree of success. While we all understand and appreciate the importance of playing with friends and schoolmates, the best football experience comes from playing safely and getting the best opportunities for each player's skill levels.

What position will my son play?

During the second week of football camp, coaches will evaluate the players to assign them to the appropriate team (Pac 10, Mac 10, Big 10) and begin to make some determination of what positions they would be best suited to play. While many boys, and parents, want to play a particular positon they will have plenty of opportunities to play several positions and to learn to play the game of football. In the end, each position is critical to fielding a competitive team and the coaches will work to ensure each players is playing a position where they have the greatest chance to achieve both team and personal success and fun.

When are games?

For Pac 10, games usually take place on Saturdays, although due to scheduling and field availability, some games may also take place on Sundays. Most Mac 10 and Big 10 games take place on Sundays, but again may take place on Saturdays based on scheduling and field availability.

Will we travel to games?

The Lake Zurich Flames are proud to be part of the TCYFL, which has more than 30 community football programs around the greater Chicago area. Your son will play teams in a variety of communities as well as at home. The TCYFL works to ensure the most competitive and fun experience for all its member communities.

We have a family vacation planned for late July or Aug, how will this affect my childs playing time or evaluations?

Games start on Aug 25th this year and football takes a lot of preparation and practice to ensure the team is working together and ensure the proper physical and mental strength to help avoid injury. It’s best if you can work your vacations around the football schedule but we understand this cannot always happen so please work with your coach or level head on keeping them informed on any planned vacations during this time. Every player in tackle football must complete 10 hours of conditiong prior to wearing full pads and participating in any contact drills. If your vacation falls during the first week of football you player will need to make up this 10 hours of conditioning. Teams are typically drafted after the first 2 weeks so it's important to try and make these weeks to ensure you player is evaluated properly and put on the appropriate team.
